PTC Mathcad Prime 12 is now available-and it’s worth the upgrade. Long-time users will notice the difference right away: calculations run faster, native 2D plots are sharper, and quality-of-life improvements like find and replace with subscript identifiers make everyday work smoother. Beyond the surface updates, the team has made deep architectural changes to the calculation engine, expanding its flexibility and setting the stage for the next generation of Mathcad development.

Application Benefits

Mathcad Prime 12- New Application Features

2D native plot updates- Native plots now support titles, axis labels, gridlines, and legends- features previously only available in the Chart Component. Great for most everyday graphing needs. For publication-ready graphs, the Chart Component is still recommended.
Header & footer updates- Page numbering can now start on any user-defined page, and you can set a different total page count than your actual worksheet length. First-page headers/footers can also differ from the rest- making custom cover pages possible.
Hide symbolic keywords- Symbolic keywords and modifiers can now be hidden on a per-evaluation basis, giving your worksheets a cleaner look for engineering reports while also reducing the length of evaluation arrows and saving page space.
Performance enhancements- Across-the-board speed improvements mean calculations render faster than any previous version of Mathcad Prime. The gains are most noticeable in larger worksheets- try running the same worksheet side-by-side in Prime 11 and Prime 12 to see the difference firsthand.

Engine enhancements

Function analysis functions- A new class of functions lets you symbolically analyze user-defined functions, including continuity, discontinuities, and local/global extrema. Two new Expression Type functions- hasVariables() and getVariables() -are also included.
MultiStart for solver functions- Right-click on maximize, minimize, find, or minerr to enable MultiStart, which searches for a global solution rather than a local one- especially useful when you're uncertain about guess values.
Optimized solver option- A new Optimize selection on minimize and maximize uses a faster approximation algorithm for quicker results. Ideal for complex problems where speed matters more than pinpoint accuracy.
Manual derivative input for solvers- Pass first and second derivatives directly as arguments into minimize and maximize for potentially faster solutions.
Improved calculus in symbolics- The symbolic engine now handles more use cases across calculus operators, with notable improvements to the limit, range-summation, and indefinite integral operators.
King Rule for definite integrals- The symbolic engine now applies the King Rule when your definite integrals meet the required form.
Integral variable substitution- Substitute the variable of integration when the substituted expression contains a single variable- integration limits update automatically.
Clear system variables safely- Using clear on system variables like TOL, CTOL, and ORIGIN now resets them to their default values without breaking ORIGIN-dependent features like submatrices.

Usability updates

PTC knows Mathcad is open for hours every day, so usability is always a priority. Prime 12 delivers on that.

Hide solve block labels- Solve Blocks have three sections: Guess Values, Constraints, and Solver. Condensing them often caused the left-side labels to overlap and look cluttered. Prime 12 adds a worksheet-level option to hide those labels entirely, giving your solve blocks a clean, polished look when sharing or printing.
Find and replace with subscripts- You can now find and replace identifiers with subscripts in one step, swapping both the identifier and its subscript simultaneously. Use the ribbon's subscript control or Ctrl + – to toggle subscripts within the find/replace dialog.
Larger page size support- A1 and A2 page sizes are now available under the Document tab, giving you a significantly larger canvas. A1 is twice the height and width of A3- combine it with landscape orientation to keep long equations from dropping into Draft View.
Improved OLE object display- Embedded OLE objects now maintain image quality when resizing, zooming, and exporting or printing your worksheet.
Worksheet background options- Three background choices are now available in the Document tab: Paper Color (the existing default), White (clean for screenshots and OLE embeds), and Gray (better contrast for those who prefer a less bright workspace).
Refresh button for include regions- Each include region now has its own refresh button, so you can pull in updated values from an included worksheet without refreshing the entire document.
